No one knows exactly why they fall in love because love is one of life's sublime mysteries, and if a person must know why they fall in love they'll probably never fall in love. The origin of Valentine's Day, like love, is also shrouded in mystery.

Most likely, Valentine's Day had its origins, not in Christianity, as many people believe, but in an ancient Roman pagan fertility rite called the Lupercalia. During Lupercalia, young men chose female partners by drawing pieces of paper with women's names on them.

When the Romans invaded Britain, they introduced their religious festivals and customs, and in this way the festival of Lupercalia was established in the British Isles. It is because Saint Valentine was martyred on the 14th of February that his name is associated with the Spring festival of Lupercalia, which took place on the 15th of February.

But who is St. Valentine? There are at least eight historical figures with the name Valentine, seven of whom celebrate their feast day on February 14. One story says that the Valentine in question was a young Christian priest who secretly married young lovers during the reign of the cruel emperor Claudius who outlawed marriage. Imprisoned, Valentine miraculously cured the jailer's daughter of blindness, which further enraged the emperor who had Valentine beheaded on February 14. Another story says Valentine fell in love with the jailer's daughter and sent her love notes signed "from your Valentine."

The oldest known Valentine dates back to the 14th Century, it's a curious little four-line verse addressed to a Friar Thomas. How or why Friar Thomas came to be a Valentine we'll never know, but the fact remains that he is recorded in the oldest known Valentine believed to exist.

Later, during the 16th and 17th centuries, poets wrote many Valentine love lyrics, most of them concerned with love, and the mating of birds because humans pair together as birds did, and it seems that Saint Valentine's Day was the appropriate day to become engaged.

It was a common custom over the centuries in Britain to draw one's Valentine by lot, and the person having become "drawn," remained as Valentine for the whole year. This custom of drawing one's Valentine by lot is believed to have been part of the ceremony connected with Lupercalia where the names of young women were put in a box and drawn by the men, guided purely by luck.

They were many women who grew weary of this "drawing of lots," especially those women of intelligence. Most certainly there were many times when chance was unfortunate in providing the wrong partner, and to have to endure this kind of Valentine as one's special friend for a whole year was very trying.

However, the custom prevailed, and it was not until the Puritans, as might be expected, abolished the observance of Valentine's Day. But, following the Restoration of 1660, St. Valentine's day was remembered as ardently as formerly.

In America, this practice of drawing your Valentine by lot continued with the game of Post Office where a boy would draw a young girls name from a box and then it was his privilege to take the name to the Postmaster, who then requested the young girl to come into the Post Office and give the young man a kiss.

During the 17th Century, mainly in the eastern parts of France, the first young man to be seen by a girl on the morning of the 14th of February became her "Valentine," in other words, her boy friend for a year. He was allowed to enjoy her company with the full consent of both families, and often the friendship ended in marriage.

In France, during the 17th Century we find gloves mentioned in Valentine doggerel and verse, even right into the Victorian era gloves were popular Valentine's Day gifts. In Wales, a hand-carved spoon was sometimes given as a love-token. The young woman would thread a piece of ribbon on the spoon and wear the spoon around her neck as a sign of engagement. From this custom we derive our word "spooning," when applied to two people courting.

England, northern France and the Netherlands were the principal Valentine countries. Mention and reference to St. Valentine customs in other countries are scarce. At one time, during the Middle Ages, Italy observed Valentine's Day, but no vestige of St. Valentine's Day celebration in Italy has taken place for centuries. In Germany, the day used to be celebrated, but the custom has long since disappeared.

Around the end of the 17th Century "art" valentines started to appear, they consisted of verses written on colored papers accompanied by drawings, anagrams and word puzzles. By the 1780's valentines were being published in all sorts of styles. There were very fine hand made valentines drawn with pen and ink and watercolors, exquisite valentines in cutout paper, and engraved valentines.

The practice of giving love tokens has persisted in America, making companies like Hallmark Cards major players in our St. Valentine's Day ritual. This year, perhaps, you might want to eschew the corporate sentiment and do something a bit more intimate like write your lover a poem, or make a hand made card, the gift will be tenderly appreciated because it was given from the heart.

We've come a long way from the days of "drawing of lots" and "spooning."

If you have a special Valentine you'd like to greet, feel free to post your Valentine's day greeting below. Happy Valentine!

What a neat history of Valentine's Day. I learn something new here everyday on FR.

To all FReepers, to all of the quiet FReepers known as lurkers, to the brave liberals who dare to tread herein, to Jim and his wife and John, their son, who provide the foundation for this fabulous exhange of ideas and humor, tears and outrage, joy and revelation-HAPPY VALENTINE's DAY!! We luv you. To Alamo-Girl, FREEPER EXTRAORDINAIRE and to the courageous, dedicated protestors from coast to coast, We luv you, too!

And a special Valentine wish for love, peace and wisdom to the Distinguished President Bush, Fabulous First Lady Laura and Incredible Vice President Cheney and Eloquent Lynn, his wonderful wife, and those they hold dear.

I know President Bush has asked that we Love our neighbors, that we spread some love around. That warms my heart. What a gracious human being he truly is- and I just wanna send a little love in the direction of DC.

Thanks for the wonderful post Victoria, I've always wondered excatly how the Valentine thing began.

Happy Valentine's Day to you and all the wonderful, incredible people who chose to call themselves FReepers, those who remain in the shadows and lurk, and to the Robinsons.

Happy Valentine's Day to the Republic and to the people who every hour of every day make this land of ours the pinnacle of mankind's achievement, may it shine forever more.

To the President and the First Lady and Mr and Mrs. Cheney who deserve the warmth and support.

A prayer for Nancy and her Ronnie, may love find its way to their hearts.

But most of all a Happy Valentine's Day to my wife, my best friend, my companion and partner; the woman who taught me that love is a bottomless well by giving me the gift of unconditional love in the persons of two wonderful sons.

I love you honey, and I'll do so forever.

What an interesting article, Victoria. Thanks so much for the flag AND the post.

They're were many women who grew weary of this "drawing of lots," especially those women of intelligence. Most certainly there were many times when chance was unfortunate in providing the wrong partner, and to have to endure this kind of Valentine as one's special friend for a whole year was very trying.

Oh dear, that WOULD be trying. LOL

During the 17th Century, mainly in the eastern parts of France, the first young man to be seen by a girl on the morning of the 14th of February became her "Valentine," in other words, her boy friend for a year.

I doubt THIS would revive in todays crazy kind of world.

I would like to wish everyone and their special love a BEAUTIFUL VALENTINES DAY!

Love is what is left in a relationship after all the selfishness is taken out. --- Nick Richardson

Love doesn't make the world go 'round. Love is what makes the ride worthwhile. --- Franklin P. Jones

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength while loving someone deeply gives you courage. --- Lao Tzo

Love has power to give in a moment what toil can scarcely reach in an age. --- Johann Wolfang von Goethe

Love makes the wildest spirit tame, and the tamest spirit wild. --- Alexis Delp

Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it. --- Song of Solomon 8:7 Bible

And one especially for the men out there:

Women were made to be loved not to be understood. --- Oscar Wilde

This year, perhaps, you might want to eschew the corporate sentiment and do something a bit more intimate like write your lover a poem

Okay then - here is a sonnet for my love:

The Power of Love

The power of the love since first we met
Has taken us to heights and depths unknown.
That precious gift that day by day has grown
Has changed two lives; a change with no regret.
The future sometimes looms, there's fear and yet,
Another path not clear, a love on loan?
No, this is love forever to be shown,
As one that differs - I must never fret.
Bright hope will keep me trusting in this love,
No choice have I, my heart forever yours.
Let come what may, we know there is no choice.
There may be times when signals from above,
Seem ominous at best, yet our love soars,
To palaces where angel choirs rejoice.

Happy Valentine's Day sweetheart

And that is the only truth of life.

I waited almost 30 years for the woman I loved...30 years ago. She just stood there and made me fall in love with her. I have loved her all these years. I have dedicated my life to medicine, but it wasn't all that good. As a matter of fact, it was a life without love, a life without feeling. When I saw her again, I was in love all over again.

The story is long and the time is short. Leave it said that 'ol timy made his mark and got the prize.

Thank you God for this luck!

The Spell of Love

What are we but two mortal bodies,
souls cast upon the spell of love?
Why is it we should come together
while there millions of others who have felt the same as we
fate, destiny, luck, chance
it's unimaginably beyond me
why
we are summoned to each other
like a magnet to steel
so undeniably strong
it's for you my love that time has kept me
in ignorance
waiting
for so long
as we search each others being
our hearts beating
rapidly
we become one
all we've each ever felt or thought
collides and explodes
as passionate bodies
intertwine souls
Now, I must ask
again, again
What are we but two mortal bodies?
Souls cast upon the spell of love?

I love the poem, Born. Thank you kindly. Let me share another one:

NEVER seek to tell thy love,
Love that never told can be;
For the gentle wind doth move
Silently, invisibly.

I told my love, I told my love,
I told her all my heart,
Trembling, cold, in ghastly fears.
Ah! she did depart!

Soon after she was gone from me,
A traveller came by,
Silently, invisibly:
He took her with a sigh.

-- William Blake -- "Love's Secret"

To: ALL

It ain't Valentine's Day yet.

But, all I have to say about the day, and the terrifying, cruel god it celebrates (Eros, not love), is to quote C.S. Lewis:

"It is in the grandeur of Eros that the seeds of danger are concealed. He has spoken like a god. His total commiment, his reckless disregard of happiness, his transcendence of self-regard, sound like a message from the eternal world.
And yet it cannot, just as it stands, be the voice of God Himself. For Eros, speaking with that very grandeur and displaying that very transcendence of self, may urge to evil as well as good. Nothing is shallower than a belief that a love which leads to sin is always qualitatively lower - more animal or more trivial - than one which leads to faithful, fruitful and Christian marriage. The love which leads to cruel and perjured unions, even to suicide-pacts and murder, is not likely to be wandering lust or idle sentiment. It may well be Eros in all his splendour; hearty-breakingly sincere; ready for every sacrifice except renunciation.
...
...Eros, honoured without reservation and obeyed unconditionally, becomes a demon. And this is just how he claims to be honoured and obeyed. Divinely indifferent to our selfishness, he is also demonically rebellious to every claim of God or Man that would oppose him. Hence as the poet says:

People in love cannot be moved by kindness,
And opposition makes them feel like martyrs."

Personally, I fear this god, Eros. I have worshipped him, without realizing it, and have served that cruel god. I would describe Eros, misplaced Eros (which is the only kind I've ever known), to be like the four seasons. In the beginning it is like Spring. It's exctiting and refreshing and new. Then summer comes, and it is hot and sultry and takes your breath away. Then Summer turns to Autumn, and the colors are beautiful. The air is crisp and perfect temperature. The light is diffuse and glowing, and it seems the bliss will go on forever. But then a cold wind blows, and knocks all the leaves to the ground, leaving the tress bare. The wind bites, and suddenly you find yourself standing alone in a vast wasteland, chilled to the bone, with no way out of the bitter wind, wishing you could just die.

That's Eros, to me. Nothing to celebrate. I know that's my own fault. I believe the truth that Eros, when combined with the other loves, and subject under the true God, is a beautiful thing, without the permanent Winter at the end. It is powerful because it is supposed to be - but that's what makes it dangerous. I will never trust myself with it again.

To: Victoria Delsoul

You're welcome, Victoria.

I saw something a few years ago that brought tears to my eyes - for the depth of love between a dear older gentleman and his beloved wife.

Shallow things pass today as "love" or as substitutes for it.

I saw this white-haired old (looked to be 80 something) man lifting up his beloved, frail little white-haired wife from her wheelchair, placing her ever so gently into the front seat of his car. He seemed barely able to accomplish this feat of caring - but he succeeded with the greatest tenderness. The lady was not lovely by the world's standards. Neither was the dear gentleman. Oh, but the beauty of the love he showed her - had the glow of heaven's smile about it.

So, to those who are loving and caring for someone who, by the world's standards, may be "unlovely" due to aging or illness or other challenges. But you love them - and, hopefully, receive love overflowing in return. I would send a special Valentine to you today! Surely the One who showed us what real love is by sending His only Son into this world to save godless and ungrateful and, yes, ugly sick sinners points to your sacrificial but genuine love and reminds those in heaven - "That's what love is. That's what I meant it to be." May God bless you and may He fill your hearts with the peace that passes all understanding as you care for that one you love.

A question more interesting than how Valentine became associated with the heart is how the heart became associated with love.

Hmmm, good question. Happy Valentine, aruanan!

Happy Valentine to you, too! I remember so clearly Valentine's Day in elementary school. Going shopping to by a bag of cards. The little paper envelopes the cards were put in. The making of cards for our moms from construction paper and paper lace. The scrabble for the good pointy scissors. The decorated boxes we each made for our desk. The walking around the class delivering the cards. The teacher handing out the little pastel colored heart candies with the two word phrases (this was in the days before "Bite Me"). Hoping for something more than perfunctory on the cards from certain special people in the class.

Jimmy, it rhymes just fine if you send it to Trent Lott, instead:

Roses are RED,

Violets are BLUE,

John McCain is a sellout,

And so are YOU!

Thanks for the memories, aruanan. I remember Valentine's Day in elementary school also. It was a lot of fun. Making cards and sharing candies was always a memorable and especial moment.

Two poems especially for you on Valentine's Day!

E monna Vanna e monna Lagia poi
con quella ch’è sul numer de le trenta
con noi ponesse il buono incantatore:

e quivi ragionar sempre d’amore,
e ciascuna di lor fosse contenta,
sì come i’ credo che saremmo noi.
-- Dante Alighieri

Deh, Vittoria, che in ombra d’Amore
ne gli occhi miei sì subito apparisti,
aggi pietà del cor che tu feristi,
che spera in te e disvïando more.

Tu, Vittoria, in forma più che umana,
foco mettesti dentro in la mia mente
col tuo piacer ch’io vidi;

e tra'mi d'ira, che mi fa pensare;
e se vuol l'un de l'altro dilettare,
trattiam di nostra donna omai, signore.

Certo il viaggio ne parrà minore
prendendo un così dolze tranquillare,
e già mi par gioioso il ritornare,
audendo dire e dir di suo valore.

Or incomincia, Amor, ché si convene,
e moviti a far ciò ch'a la cagione
che ti dichini a farmi compagnia,

o vuol merzede o vuol tua cortesia;
ché la mia mente il mio penser dipone,
cotal disio de l'ascoltar mi vene.

--Dante --"Deh, ragioniamo insieme un poco, Amore"

RE: #18

Thank you for the ping. I apologize, but for a whole variety of reasons I was unable to respond to your post in a timely fashion. It was an interesting post and I appreciate your bringing it to my attention. Fascinating history. Thanks again.
